Those less familiar with coaching may find it more abstract than it actually is. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) describes coaching as a "transformative journey" toward discovering one's potential.
In a professional context, we can see it more simply as a dedicated space for high-level reflection. At the senior level, you are the expert in your field and don’t need to be told how to do your job. However, you may benefit from a trusted sounding board—someone to help you navigate the "unfamiliar roads" of leadership while you remain firmly in control of the destination.
This partnership is designed to stimulate creativity and unlock solutions you likely already possess but haven't articulated yet.
Common areas of focus include removing the "interference" that gets in the way of progress. This often involves:
Defining outcomes: Narrowing your focus to workable objectives so your time and energy are spent where they matter most.
The Inner System: Exploring your patterns of thought, emotion, and action to better manage your internal resources.
Addressing blind spots: Identifying the less obvious aspects of a situation that might cloud your judgment.
Navigating Friction: Develop straightforward, effective ways to handle conflict and improve collaboration with those around you.
Stakeholder Intentions: Improve your understanding of the needs and intentions of the groups you lead to ensure true alignment.
Strategic Integration: Ensure that your immediate action plans genuinely serve your long-term vision.
Balance and Fulfillment: Practicing self-care and seeking balance in the broader context of your life's journey.
Ultimately, coaching is about facilitating deep, lasting change and helping you become more effective in your role while leading a more fulfilling life.

The formal framework and ethics behind this work are outlined in detail on the ICF website:
